Saltburn by the Sea: Guerrilla knitters stitch up Saltburn Pier!

Guerrilla knitters stitch up Saltburn Pier!

I like this a lot! I wonder if I could get a gang to do this somewhere in Oxford. The Ashmoleon perhaps, or Bonn Square
Saltburn has once again been the target for some serious yarn bombing as the Guerrilla knitters have struck again - and how!

If you strolled down the pier on Saturday you would have found it difficult not to notice pieces of brightly coloured knitting tied along the pier railing. Welcome to guerrilla knitting.

This is graffiti, but with yarn. It's not something new - people have been doing it for years, all over the world - but Saturday's session in Saltburn was extra special.

Last October, we reported that a knitter, or knitters, had tried to pull the wool over the eyes of hundreds of visitors and residents by tying scarves and knitted figures to various parts of the town centre - to lamp-posts, railings, buildings and outside the library. Knitted teddy bears were also to be seen having a picnic on Marine Parade.

But now the latest 50-yard long Olympic-themed creation which has suddenly appeared on Saltburn Pier has stitched up the title as one of the longest scarves in the North-east.

Scores of people have been doing a double-take at the “marathon” scarf as they walk along the historic pier.

Every few metres a different Olympic sport has been portrayed - from synchronised swimming to a cycling velodrome - each with their own little group of knitted athletes.
What's the point, though? "It's about making people smile and bringing art out of the galleries so everyone can appreciate it," is the comment of Magda Sayeg, one of the world's most revered guerilla knitters.

Although we are not able to reveal the identity of the Saltburn yarn bombers we can confirm that this particular piece is the work of more than one individual and it has captivated everyone who has seen it.

Kerry Paterson: "It's big! Whoever knitted this is very talented! Absolutely fab it is! Go see."

Louise Tierney: "This is brilliant. We were down on the pier on Saturday morning and saw it, a lot of time and effort has gone into this knitting, definitely worth a visit to see it."

Rachel Armstrong: "It's fab, I like it when something simple can put a smile on your face :)"

Craft Britannia Shop of the Week #2 - Shalotte

I wantto thank my fellow CB teamies for doing such a fab job of promoting so far this week on my stint as Craft Britannia shop of the week on Etsy.

I have had loads of tweets, fb posts, shop favourites, item faves, circle additions, blog posts and treasuries made for my shop that my head is fairly swimming.

Here are some of the wonderful treasuries that have been made, you saw the two that made the FP earlier in the week so here are some of the others

You are buying from a British Designer/Maker

Here are some "You are Buying From" signs. I think these are probably the best ones to put on your stands.

The design is going to be tested out by Em of PixieDoodlesUK at her stand over the weekend

Do you like the first, second or  third?

I Support British Designer/Makers/Craftspeople

After a lot of conversations on various etsy teams, and discussions at fairs and events  it becomes clear that a lot of my fellow british craftspeople who both design and make their own pieces are becoming more and more tired with going to fairs and events and being bombarded with bought in items, franchises and resellers instead of the advertised crafts. We also feel that we are considered strange by people because we actually make the items on our stalls ourselves.

We feel that people are somewhat used to going to craft fairs and instead of getting beautifully hand crafted items they are being shown items that you could get on any high street in britain,

To go with this discussion I have been busy this morning designing signs for my fellow makers to print out and display on their stands, on websites and even their online shops to explain that what is on offer has been made with their own fair hands.

What follows are some prototype designs that I will be asking opinions on from other makers so we can decide on a final few for our own use.

Happy 1st of March - I dare not go a hunting/For fear of little men

To celebrate I have been out with my camera to our local woods searching for faery haunts, dells and dancing places.

I found a ring that one of the fay must have dropped
One of the first flowers of spring
 A leftover drinking horn?
Another secret nook

A mystic snake, guarding the entrance

A magical toadstool hat, it must have been worn by one of the musicians
Alas, I had to leave all too soon. If I stayed out  late I might have joined them in their dancing and never been seen again
