TeamCB SOTW - Belle Cards and Gifts

This week our TeamCB SOTW is Fiona from Bellecardsandgifts

Fiona is my darling friend, a fellow lover of peacocks, elephants, Moroccan designs, bright bold colours, boho style and of course is a fellow foodie.

We like to interview our team members so to find out more  just carry on down the screen

Welcome to this week’s Shop of the Week, Bellecardsandgifts, a treasure trove of vintage style trinket boxes and gifts. Find out more about Fiona in our interview…
Describe your “typical” working day or week
A typical day for me starts around 6.30 when I have my first cup of herbal tea, browse Etsy for new faves and look at my shop activity. I normally take this time to check my stats, relist any expired orders and, if I’m lucky(!) relist a sold order.
I am an absolute treasury addict and seem to find early mornings are the best time to create one, as I sit by my window overlooking the park and listen to the birds sing and the world slowly wake up. It’s my favourite time of the day.
My best days to work creatively are normally Monday and Wednesday when I don’t have college and other commitments to distract me. I make a list each week of what I would like to achieve and keep referring back to it as I find more inspiration. I like to sketch out my designs first although this often develops into something quite different!

Set of 4 Marie Antoinette Coasters by Bellecardsandgifts

At the moment I am working on a series of themed wooden trinket boxes…. I am photographing and listing my Shakespeare one today. Queen Elizabeth I and characters from Charles Dickens are the next ones in my Famous Brits series. Then I want to make a Vintage Olde Sweete Shoppe box, with candy pink stripes and handmade miniature sweets. I am thrilled to have just found a gorgeous dolls house miniatures shop local to me, where I can source gorgeous detail for my boxes.
My Sundays are taken up with doing a stall at the famous craft market Abbey Mills, where William Morris once had his print workshops. It is a wonderful place where I love to look at other stalls and find lots of lovely ephemera for my boxes – like lace, vintage watch parts, beads etc… so I am thrilled to be selling there myself!
What advice would you give someone taking up your craft for the first time?
For anyone considering starting their own craft business I would say ‘Be Brave, Be Bold’ and in the words of the Grandfather of the British Craft Industry William Morris – ‘Create For Love, Not Profit’. I believe that if you are passionate enough about what you make, that passion will shine through and the sales will come!

Which piece of equipment would you be helpless without?
The item I could never be without is my pair of small but very sharp scissors. They are vital for getting great cuts, especially the fine detail of decoupage. I use them for so many other things too like wire wrapping and adding glue to small areas. There have been a few occasions when I have lost them and it’s panic stations!
Tell us about what inspires and motivates you
I find inspiration in so many things, from exhibitions like Hollywood Costume at the V & A, to finding gorgeous vintage things at flea markets… basically anything beautiful from times gone by!
Thank you Fiona! We love your style and words of wisdom.

TeamCB SoTW - GracesFavours

Its Spring!!! and the means the return of the Craft BritanniaShop of the Week

This week our chosen shop is GracesFavours which is run by Simmi.

Simmi makes the most gorgeous felt camper van and bus plushies as well as name banners, bunting, and car decorations.

This is her lovely interview from our team blog

***************************************************
Our hugely popular CraftBritannia Shop of the Week feature is back again after our winter break! We kick off with team member Simmi of GracesFavours, who makes cute gifts, decorations and baby toys. Find out more in our weekly interview.
Describe your “typical” working day or week
I work Monday to Wednesday for a partnership of Local Councils, so on those days I do most of my social networking and promoting while I’m at work (shhhh – don’t tell them!) and then crafting in the evenings. I’ve got two small children – Seren is 4 and Patrick is 2, so they’re at nursery while I’m at work, and then Thursdays & Fridays are my Mummy days, so I try and get some crafting in while CBeebies is distracting them!! At the weekend, my husband will often take the kids out for a couple of hours so I can get some of the more messy jobs done – like working with seed beads or anything that needs glueing!
When you are not doing Etsy related things, what are you doing?
Mainly playing Mummy to my two kids or being at the day job, but I am also involved in our local Amateur Dramatics group – so often I’m rehearsing for a play or helping with scenery painting/costume making… my husband and daughter were in the panto this year, so I had babysitting duties for Patrick while they were out rehearsing.
What was the first piece you ever sold?
I sold a felt alphabet to a friend, only a day after I’d finished making a set of letters for Seren (which were the first thing I made)… I was SO thrilled.
What advice would you give someone taking up your craft for the first time?
Plan your design on paper first! I’m bad at planning – I have a design in my head and I’m too impatient to get it made in felt, but it always takes me twice as long as I have to alter bits along the way!
What material do you most enjoy working with?
Felt! I do like fleece too, but felt is just so forgiving – it doesn’t fray, it sticks to itself, so doesn’t slip and it comes in so many pretty colours!

Which piece of equipment would you be helpless without?
A decent pair of scissors! You can cut tiny details into felt as long as you have small sharp scissors.
Tell us about what inspires and motivates you
I’m inspired by my friends and family mostly – almost all of my creations have come about by having a totally innocuous conversation over a glass of wine (or occasionally tea & cake!) which sparks an idea in my mind. My most popular item – the cuddly campervans – came about because a friend was bemoaning that she’d never have enough money to buy herself a campervan, so I thought I’d set about making her one!

Tell us about one handmade item that you own and love
A beautiful old chair that came off a ship (around the time of The Titanic), which belonged to my great-grandfather – there is a hessian sack under the seat which describes the provenance and it has been gorgeously re-upholstered recently by a local artisan.
What plans do you have for your shop in the future?
I am planning to quit my day job in the Summer as my daughter will be starting school in September, so with the childcare costs dramatically reduced it seemed like a good time to make the leap!! So I will be working for myself full time (or as full time as the kids allow!) which is REALLY exciting and also REALLY scary!! I’d also like to start selling PDF patterns of some of my items.
Thank you Simmi, we love your colourful creations!

Some lovely things with a Valentines Theme

I thought today I would share with you all some lovely items from my team members from TeamCB on Etsy

#1 are these gorgeous pastel cupcake fridge magnets from Marieanne of DamsonTree Pottery. If I had a fridge that wasn't on the floor and therefor prone to decorations being knocked off I would cover it in these

#2 is this fantastic hand decorated trinket box from Fiona at Bellecardsandgifts.
I chose this circus box because of its pretty feminine style and I love Circus themed items as well as anything with stripes

#3 is something that I just adore. This multi layered leather wrap bracelet from JCUDesigns is feminine with a nice edginess with the rustic leather and the soft pink tones

#4 is this gorgeous handmade paper bowl from Sally of OkiFolki. She specialises in paper art and these trinket bowls are one of her newest creations

#5 are these fab hand poured  heart shaped crayons from Danielle of Colour Me Fun who makes these wonderfully funky crayons that are perfect for children and adults

I hope you all enjoyed my Valentines picks. I hope to do a weekly feature of team mates so any suggestion of themes would be lovely
